About Breathe Metro Manila

Breathe Metro Manila (BMM) is a pioneering collaboration that brings together science, technology, and civic engagement to tackle air pollution in the National Capital Region. Modeled after the globally recognized Breathe London project, BMM will deploy, operate, and sustain a regional-scale sensor network providing real-time, hyperlocal air quality data to inform health, transport, and climate actions.

Health experts raised alarm on Wednesday over the worsening air pollution in Metro Manila, saying it has escalated from an environmental issue into a serious public health emergency. To address this, a coalition of academic institutions and technology partners under the banner Breathe Metro Manila launched a campaign to improve real-time air quality monitoring across the region. The group is advocating for data-driven solutions to mitigate health risks and inform policy.

As Metro Manila continues to grapple with air pollution, there is a need to raise public awareness of its health risks through more real-time and comprehensive air monitoring, according to experts on Wednesday. Experts echoed these sentiments during the launch of Breath Metro Manila, a coalition composed of Manila Observatory, Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH), Ateneo Business Insights Laboratory Development (BUILD), and technology provider Clarity Movement.

A new coalition composed of technology and academic institutions is pushing for real-time air quality monitoring to get a bigger and better picture of the pollution crisis that has been fogging Metro Manila for decades. Called Breathe Metro Manila, the coalition is also advocating for collaborative efforts and data-driven solutions to reduce the health risks linked to pollution.
